Defence begins in trial of ex-U.Va. lacrosse player accused in former girlfriend's slaying

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - A judge has refused to reduce or dismiss charges in the first-degree murder trial of a former University of Virginia lacrosse player accused of killing his girlfriend.

Circuit Judge Edward Hogshire acted Wednesday on a defence motion in the trial of George Huguely V. He is on trial accused of slaying Yeardley Love in a final, violent encounter with the suburban Baltimore woman.

With the motion dismissed, attorneys for Huguely have begun presenting their witnesses. The prosecution rested earlier Wednesday after presenting around 50 witnesses.
