US congratulates Libya on anniversary of uprising that toppled Gadhafi

WASHINGTON - The United States is congratulating Libya on the anniversary of the uprising that toppled Moammar Gadhafi, while noting that a democracy and institutions will take time to build.

White House press secretary Jay Carney issued a statement Friday saying the revolutionaries who fought for liberty have a responsibility now to protect their freedoms by working with the government to establish stability, peace and reconciliation.

The White House also calls for protecting the rights of all Libyans, saying that "will help preserve the unity of purpose that defined the revolution."

The anniversary comes as the country's official government is struggling to maintain order in face of hundreds of armed militias and widespread corruption.
